What is PILATES?

Pilates is a method of exercise created by Joseph Pilates many decades ago that trains the deepest muscles of the spine and pelvis, along with the entire body. Exercises are performed on a mat and on the various pieces of apparatus invented by Joseph Pilates himself to guide the body to better alignment and condition. Pilates is considered mind-body exercise for its’ use of the original six principles taught by Joseph Pilates:

BREATHING—dedicated breath pattern to every movement
CONTROL— conscious, deliberate muscular movement
CENTERING— awareness of alignment and use of deep “core” muscles
CONCENTRATION—mindfully focused movement
PRECISION—correct technique equals correcting the body
FLOW—continuous, effortless movement of full body engagement
